Abstract

Presentation of Issue 5 of PRAGMA Magazine

Issue 5 of the PRAGMA periodical is a special issue as it is made up of six articles: one dedicated to the visual communication section, and five articles dedicated to the architecture and urban planning sections. In this issue, these five works are contributions refereed by the scientific committee of the 1st International Congress of Territorial Transformations (CITTE) organized by the Academic Body BUAP-118-Sustainable territorial planning and management of the Faculty of Architecture of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, in collaboration with the graduate program of said Faculty, as well as with the academic bodies 116-Design and Technology, 407-Architecture, urban planning and education aimed at professional strategies and 13-Strategic design and innovation for visual communication. These collaborations have been integrated into a section dedicated to the two disciplines, architecture and urban planning, as it is intended to show the close relationship that exists between both, as well as their impact on the quality of life of people.

The first article addresses the importance of adequate and safe mobility for older people living in urban environments. It is argued that if buildings and the city promote accessible mobility for older people, it will be possible to improve their autonomy, their social relationships, the physical activity they perform, and the isolation caused by the lack of adequate urban infrastructure would be reduced.

The second article addresses a little-explored topic, urban trees considered as a heritage due to their “remarkable” character, but threatened by the lack of regulations that regulate their protection and care. The authors present a case where civil society organized to care for a tree and the public space where it is located, advised by specialists in urban trees.

And in the same vein, the following work addresses the importance of citizen participation for the appropriation of public space. The case of a park in the city of Puebla that serves two neighborhoods is presented. However, its physical-spatial conditions and the lack of community activities have resulted in an underutilization of urban space. Strategies are discussed to improve the situation and take advantage of the park to promote the well-being of the residents.

The fourth article presents an analysis of an urban megaproject built in the State of Puebla, Ciudad Modelo. Results are presented on both public and community actions carried out to compensate for the lack of infrastructure and urban equipment in this new city. To close the Architecture and Urbanism section, a work is presented on the mobility of the population of Ixtulco, Tlaxcala, especially to use public space. The study focuses on children, older adults and people with disabilities.

In this issue, the article in the visual communication section shows a methodological proposal using color to carry out a research protocol for a degree in graphic design. The objective is to transmit more clearly the components of a thesis protocol.

Without a doubt, this issue of the PRAGMA periodical publication will contribute to the reflection on the impact that architecture, public space and cities have on the lives of urbanites. In addition, the need to innovate in the teaching of design at the undergraduate level is addressed to respond to the profile of current students and the available technology.
